Crafting Extra Special Christmas Stockings: A Personal Journey

Ready to make your Christmas even more magical? Why not create your own personalised stockings this year! 🎅💫 There's something so special about adding a personal touch to your holiday décor, and for me, this year is extra meaningful.

My incredibly talented mum has hand-embroidered stockings for her 5 grandkids, each one beautifully personalised with their names and each slightly different. Now, she’s given me the lovely task of turning those embroidered designs into finished stockings! It’s a project I’m excited to dive into, and I wanted to share my process with you, so you can create your own extra-special stockings, too!

The grandkids call mum gigi (for grovvy gran) so she put gigi down on the bottom right so the kids can always remember it was made with love and joy specially for each of them.

This year, we’re using a stunning pattern from the wonderful shop @tistheseasonmatangi. If you haven’t visited them yet, make sure to add it to your list—they have a gorgeous selection of Christmas-themed designs, perfect for adding that festive flair!

These stockings were super easy to transform from a embroidered piece to a completed stocking by quilting the back, batting and back lining together. Then cutting I cut the back, front lining and front embroidered piece into the desired shape and size.

Making the binding

For the best binding on a piece that isn’t square you cut your fabric on a 45degree angle and make your bias as you normally would. First I attached the binding to the top opening of the fabric and sew down, then attach to the front of the stocking and add some to the top to create your handle to be able to hang up by the fire for santa, pin or clip well and sew it all together, I like to use the quilting clips to fold the bias over then hand sew down at the back.

Cutting the bias on the angle helps give it some more give when shaping around the corners of the stocking.

Enjoy and I hope Santa fills your stocking to the brim!
