Handsewn Baby Block

Today, I’m thrilled to share my latest challenge piece: a handsewn baby block created using the paper piecing method. This project was both a test of patience and a rewarding accomplishment! The design relies on a simple template and three contrasting fabrics to create the striking 3D effect of the block.

Paper piecing is a quilting technique where you sew fabric pieces onto a paper template, which provides precision and structure to intricate designs. For this project, I chose bold, contrasting fabrics that really make the 3D illusion pop. The process involves careful planning, accurate cutting, and plenty of tiny stitches—all done by hand!

While I thoroughly enjoyed tackling this challenge, I’ve come to realize how much I appreciate my sewing machine. Handsewing this piece gave me a new level of respect for quilters who do everything by hand, but for me, the machine will remain my go-to for quilting projects. Still, there's something uniquely satisfying about completing a piece entirely by hand and seeing it come to life.

If you’re considering a similar project, I highly recommend giving paper piecing a try. It’s an excellent technique for achieving precise designs, and the 3D effect adds such a fun dimension to the finished piece. Just be prepared for a bit of a time investment if you’re handsewing!

Thanks for following along on this journey. Have you ever tried paper piecing or handsewn a project? I’d love to hear about your experiences in the comments below!
